Description

Just set below the bullring, now beneath the houses of Hillfort Close, was West End Brickworks. This was one of Ely’s 2 brickworks (other was Highland Park near Heol Trelai, now under Argyle industrial estate). Both were owned by the Thorne family. Red marls from the cliffs to the south of the site (where the A4232 now is) were used to make the bricks that built many of the houses in the area. The West End site closed in 1962 and Heol Trelai site in 1975.
