Dated to the Bronze Age and around 3,500 years old, it is thought to have had a ritual purpose. A modern (probably 19th century) inscription towards the base of the stone facing the road records its location as a parish boundarymarker.
in October 2011 the sone was knocked out of place by a reversing car, however, following conservation work it has now been replaced in its original position.
