Description

A photo of my father Watkin Evan Jones, Church Hill, Bryn Road, Lampeter taken whilst on shore leave at Singapore. He was aged 20 and was a Midshipman RNR on board the HMS Laurentic, an armed merchant cruiser. He was on board the Laurentic when it was carrying gold bullion from Cape Town to Halifax, Nova Scotia. The bullion was for the Canadian and American governments as payment for munitions. He fortunately left the Laurentic in December 1916, as in January 1917 the Laurentic was again carrying gold bullion, this time to the United States, but was struck by a mine or torpedo and at least 180 men died, he lost many friends.
