Letter from Corporal John Griffith Jones, from Algiers, to his family in Beaver Dam, Wisconsin, 24 December 1863 [page 1 of 4]

Description

As he does frequently in his letters, John thanks God for looking after him.

They haven't gone to Decsas yet. The boat is waiting for them and they're likely to leave tomorrow morning. John mentions what he was doing this time last year when he was traveling down the river from Memphis to Vicksburg.

The news arrived yesterday that Lee has surrendered and that the artilleries were firing very close yesterday and today. John says if the story's true, then the rebels are very close.

John also mentions that the eggs and butter are expensive. He writes in English at the end 'we get plenty ffressh Oysters from the shells ffor 5 C the dos'.
