Description
Trade Directories give an insight into the development of towns. In Pigot Pontypool is described as:
"The name is derived from Pont-ap-Howell, or 'Howell's-bridge', a bridge by the town. It was once celebrated for the manufacture of japanned ware, peculiar in its kind, named 'Pontypool japan': this branch has ceased to profit inhabitants, but the manufacture of tin plates is still carried on, and the town derives great consequence from the mineral treasures abounding in the surrounding country. ...........
The market days are Wednesday and Saturday; and the fairs are held April 2nd, and 22nd, July 5th, and October 10th for horses, cattle, sheep, cheese, &c."
