Digital Projects

Use these guidelines to develop classroom task ideas. The students should be carrying out these steps, with your guidance, so that they gain the skills set out in the Digital Competence Framework (DCF). The applicable skills are set out beneath each step, although some skills like interacting and collaborating are used throughout.

STEP 1 Choose a subject

Decide on the story you would like to tell, or the subject you want to explore. There are several ways to go next:

Look around at what's already uploaded and favourite any item that will enrich or help tell or illustrate your story. Under the Creative Archive Licence of the website, any item can be reused to enrich another as long as it reused on the website.

Or research and digitise new items to upload. This could include researching local history and digitising documents, letters, old pictures or interviewing family or older members of your community and with their permission recording audio or video formats.

Set out what you aim to do, and get students to set out their own success criteria.

STEP 2 Gather Information

Plan how to get hold of all the information you will need; including any interviews, sound clips, videos or images you might want to use. Have a look at the People’s Collection Wales website to see what’s already there and you might want to include or research.

Plan what equipment you need to record or store information gathered, such as scanners or cameras.

Gather information, digitise and store items appropriately; using cloud storage, folders etc. Share Information electronically between all who are working on the project.

You are best to document your project first and upload once all elements are complete. This will ensure you have all the information gathered to make for excellent metadata that will be stored with each image, document or video.

STEP 3 Plan content

Plan the best way to tell your story. Create a plan with the students by either filling one of our templates, or older students may want to create their own.

Types of content:

Story (body of text with images and other media on the page)
Collection (Images, videos, PDFs etc collected together to scroll through with a description)
Trail (images, video, etc., set out on a map)

STEP 4 Create

Make sure all permissions have been gained and copyright for new images sourced cleared (no need for images already on the website). See help sheet on copyright. Upload the items with metadata, this is simply the relevant information to go with the image such as title, date, location and description. See help sheet for tips on metadata.

Create the collection, story or trail. We advise that you review content and before publishing.

STEP 5 Evaluate

Encourage students to comment on each other’s work. Tweak content or get students to set out how to do things differently next time. Record the evaluation.
