Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic (BAME) History...

Wales is a multicultural nation, with migration into Wales strongly linked to our industrial past. Up to the present day, people have come to Wales to work, to study, to seek asylum and to live. We all contribute to the culture and history of Wales. In this Collection we aim to bring together the stories of ethnic minority people and communities in Wales. This resource is based on content currently published on People's Collection Wales. There is currently more content about African and Caribbean people and communities than other ethnic minority groups, and this is reflected in this resource. We are working to engage with organisations, communities and individuals to create a broader and more diverse representation of the people of Wales. This resource will grow as more content becomes available. Can you help? If you have content that will help tell the stories of ethnic minority individuals and communities in Wales (past and present) please add it to the People's Collection Wales. Case Study: Royal Charter Shipwreck Cover Image Login to save this item A vector image of a star to represent action to save this item
Case Study: Royal Charter Shipwreck

The 'Great Storm of 1859', one of the most destructive storms in British history, hit the coast of Wales on 25-26 October 1859. Nearly 150 ships were lost, the most famous of which was the steamship Royal Charter, which wrecked off the coast of Anglesey with the loss of 450 lives. The shipwrecks of the Great Storm provide a unique window on the Victorian period in Wales - a moment in time through which to explore our trading links with the wider world, forgotten maritime industries, and the society of the day.Three schools from Anglesey spent several months studying the Royal Charter shipwreck, in a joint partnership project between Cadw and the Royal Commission on the Ancient and Historical Monuments of Wales (RCAHMW). Read about their project, get great ideas for classroom activities and see examples of the work produced by the pupils. You can also explore the source material they used here on People's Collection Wales, including beautiful gold artefacts and everyday objects recovered from the Royal Charter shipwreck. Key Stage 2History, Literacy skills, Numeracy skills Case StudySee how other schools have used our website to give you ideas for your own digital projects.

Case Study: Mapping the Model

Mapping the Model was an Arts Council of Wales Lead Creative Schools Project, that took place in Model Church in Wales School, Carmarthen, in the Spring Term of 2018. The project was a collaboration between artist Rowan O’Neill and the Year 4 Creative Group, and was designed in response to the brief prepared by the school: Can an exploration of deep mapping, via Welsh poetry and drama, improve confidence and oracy skills and enhance creative thinking for pupils in Year 4?The challenge of this project was to find different ways of mapping links between the school and the town of Carmarthen, including geography, history and legend. The result was an investigative project around the concept of mapping, that used People’s Collection Wales to digitally publish and record the diverse work created. Key Stage 2History, Geography, Literacy skills, Numeracy skills, Digital Competence Framework Case StudySee how other schools have used our website to give you ideas for your own digital projects.

John Cornwell: Colliery photos

John Cornwell was a freelance photographer who took many photographs of collieries, mostly in south Wales and the English Midlands, both underground and on the surface, during the 1970s and early 1980s. He perfected a method of underground photography using the standard colliery lighting and was able to photograph coal faces, roadways, shafts and equipment with amazing clarity. In addition to photographing working mines he also recorded abandoned mine workings, above and below ground. John Cornwell was also well respected in the broader field of industrial archaeology. He published a number of books on Welsh and English collieries. The copyright of his south Wales images are now owned by National Museum Wales. Key Stage 2History, Art & DesignKey Stage 3Art & Design CollectionWe have collected these items together so that you can quickly and easily use them as resources to create activities for your class.
