Royal Charter Shipwreck case study

The 'Great Storm of 1859', one of the most destructive storms in British history, hit the coast of Wales on 25-26 October 1859. Nearly 150 ships were lost, the most famous of which was the steamship Royal Charter, which wrecked off the coast of Anglesey with the loss of 450 lives. The shipwrecks of the Great Storm provide a unique window on the Victorian period in Wales - a moment in time through which to explore our trading links with the wider world, forgotten maritime industries, and the society of the day.Three schools from Anglesey spent several months studying the Royal Charter shipwreck, in a joint partnership project between Cadw and the Royal Commission on the Ancient and Historical Monuments of Wales (RCAHMW). Mapping the Model was an Arts Council of Wales Lead Creative Schools Project, that took place in Model Church in Wales School, Carmarthen, in the Spring Term of 2018. The project was a collaboration between artist Rowan O’Neill and the Year 4 Creative Group, and was designed in response to the brief prepared by the school: Can an exploration of deep mapping, via Welsh poetry and drama, improve confidence and oracy skills and enhance creative thinking for pupils in Year 4?The challenge of this project was to find different ways of mapping links between the school and the town of Carmarthen, including geography, history and legend. The history of the Welsh language in Patagonia

Emigration was an ordinary aspect of life in nineteenth-century Wales. Economic hardship, above anything else, caused thousands of Welsh people to leave their native communities in search of a better life in the United States. Yet, while there was hope of a better standard of living in North America, many immigrants were aware of the danger that they would lose their national characteristics as they and their descendents assimilated into American society. Michael D. Jones observed this tendency during a visit to the United States in 1848-9 and he was convinced of the need for a Welsh settlement in Patagonia as a means of safeguarding the language, customs and religion of his compatriots. In Michael D. Jones’s mind, the establishment of a settlement where the Welsh language had official status would allow the national identity of the immigrants to flourish unhindered.  Key Stage 3History Learning Activity PackThis resource provides learning activities for your students using our content. Soon after the first settlers had made their new home on the banks of the River Chupat, they constructed a wooden building to accomodate the first school in Patagonia. The Rev. Lewis Humphreys, originally from Ganllwyd, was appointed as schoolmaster. To cap it all, the Camwy Valley was struck in 1899 by the worst floods since the arrival of the first Welsh settlers in 1865. According to contemporary reports, it rained in the Camwy Valley for more than three weeks, which caused the level of the river to rise at a rate of fifteen inches every twelve hours. Shortly after the 'Mimosa' had anchored in New Bay on 27 July 1865, Captain George Pepperrell, the surgeon Thomas Greene, and some half a dozen of the male passengers, decided to disembark and inspect the land. The Welsh were not the first inhabitants of Patagonia. For centuries, indigenous tribes had lived on the Patagonian plains, speaking their own language and practising their own customs. Among them were the 'Tehuelche', a nomadic tribe which originated from the area between the River Negro and the Strait of Magellan.
