This resource invites learners to approach the history of Welsh industrialisation from a different perspective. The city of Hughesovka, today’s Donetsk in the Donbas region of eastern Ukraine (former Russian Empire), was founded by Welsh and British workers. The Holocaust and Wales: Kindertransport Lesson 1
Fleeing across Europe to escape the Nazis, about 10,000 Jewish children arrived in Great Britain between December 1938 and May 1940 on 'Kindertransport' (Children’s Transport). Most of them had to travel without their parents or other family members. Several of them ended up in Wales. Case Study: Swansea Windrush Intergenerational...
The Windrush Intergenerational Project was developed by the African Community Centre (ACC), working with young people in local schools, to research the lives of the Windrush generation who arrived in Wales from the West Indies between the 1940s and 1970s.The project sought to bridge the gap between older and younger generations, especially with regards to passing down culture, tradition, journeys, settlement and other experiences. It records and documents the amazing contributions that Black and Ethnic Minority migrants have brought to the UK, and to Swansea/Neath Port Talbot in particular.In total, the project celebrates the lives of ten elders, a combination of members of the Windrush generation and other persons whose contributions have made South Wales a multicultural society.The case study text is bilingual however the video interviews and booklet are available in English only. A collection of architectural drawings by the Newport architect R.G. Thomas (1820 - 1883).Thomas was an architect and engineer who spent most of his life in Australia, having emigrated from Britain in 1836. He returned to Britain in 1846, where he remained for a period of 15 years, most of which were spent in Newport. During this time he was involved in numerous diverse building projects ranging from a drainage system for a housing estate to designs for cottages and villas and from shop-fronts to schools, churches and town halls. Case Study: Cynefin - Our Welcome
Cynefin - Our Welcome is a community film education project by The Welfare Ystradgynlais. It was funded by Ffilm Cymru Wales and supported by Michael Sheen and the Josef Herman Art Foundation.The Welfare Ystradgynlais’ community arts team worked with Ysgol Maesydderwen, Ysgol Dyffryn Y Glowyr and Syrian families who have settled in Ystradgynlais, to tell stories of refugees past and present. Award winning animation company Winding Snake Productions worked with the community to produce the two animated films that share stories about how people fleeing conflict have been made welcome in Ystradgynlais.This project won the Digital Excellence Award in the Welsh Heritage Schools Initiative Competition 2018. Case Study: Royal Charter Shipwreck
The 'Great Storm of 1859', one of the most destructive storms in British history, hit the coast of Wales on 25-26 October 1859. Nearly 150 ships were lost, the most famous of which was the steamship Royal Charter, which wrecked off the coast of Anglesey with the loss of 450 lives. The shipwrecks of the Great Storm provide a unique window on the Victorian period in Wales - a moment in time through which to explore our trading links with the wider world, forgotten maritime industries, and the society of the day.Three schools from Anglesey spent several months studying the Royal Charter shipwreck, in a joint partnership project between Cadw and the Royal Commission on the Ancient and Historical Monuments of Wales (RCAHMW). Case Study: Mapping the Model
Mapping the Model was an Arts Council of Wales Lead Creative Schools Project, that took place in Model Church in Wales School, Carmarthen, in the Spring Term of 2018. The project was a collaboration between artist Rowan O’Neill and the Year 4 Creative Group, and was designed in response to the brief prepared by the school: Can an exploration of deep mapping, via Welsh poetry and drama, improve confidence and oracy skills and enhance creative thinking for pupils in Year 4?The challenge of this project was to find different ways of mapping links between the school and the town of Carmarthen, including geography, history and legend. The result was an investigative project around the concept of mapping, that used People’s Collection Wales to digitally publish and record the diverse work created.
