‘Merched y Wawr’ was established in 1967 in ‘Y Parc’ near Bala as a patriotic society providing opportunities to women of all ages to socialise in Welsh and to campaign for the rights of Women and the Welsh language. Today, there are over 270 branches and clubs, nearly 7,000 members of ‘Merched y Wawr’ and ‘Gwawr’ clubs across Wales.

In 2016 the charity was awarded grant funding from the Heritage Lottery fund for a year long heritage project which aims to collect materials relating to Merched y Wawr’s unique history and its contribution to Welsh culture over the past fifty years. As part of the project material will be put online on the People’s Collection Wales website. If you have any relevant document, photograph or memorabilia about the charity then please include them here as part of this collection.

Please visit our website for more information about the society and how you can get involved in our fiftieth birthday celebrations and become a part of Merched y Wawr’s unique history.
