Hughesovka - Welsh Migration and...
This resource invites learners to approach the history of Welsh industrialisation from a different perspective. The city of Hughesovka, today’s Donetsk in the Donbas region of eastern Ukraine (former Russian Empire), was founded by Welsh and British workers. Using Hughesovka as a case study, the resource aims to enable learners to develop a more nuanced and critical perspective on the history of industrialisation in their country and to critically engage with archival material.Authors: Clara Defachel and Dr Victoria Donovan, University of St Andrews, Scotland. The Holocaust and Wales: Kindertransport 1
Fleeing across Europe to escape the Nazis, about 10,000 Jewish children arrived in Britain between December 1938 and September 1939 on the Kindertransport (children’s transport). The British government only admitted unaccompanied minors through this scheme, even though most of them had lived with their parents and other members of their families before their flight. Victorian Swansea - People and Possessions
What objects did the people of Swansea have in their houses in the mid-19th century? When you visit a museum you will see displays of household objects and everyday items that have survived from the 19th century. Some have been handed down through families, some have been found by archaeologists, some have been bought or borrowed, some have been donated to the museum. Some relate to people's work, some to running the household, some to leisure and pastimes.Objects can tell us a lot about how people lived, how well-off or poor they were and what sorts of materials and manufacturing were available. Case Study: Life of a Roman Soldier
For Kids in Museums Takeover Day 2015, pupils from St Woolos Primary School, were given a tour of the National Roman Legion Museum, Caerleon, including a special visit to the 'behind the scenes' collection area. Here the children saw and held Roman objects that are rarely seen by the public, some of them only recently found at the site. Using what they had learnt as inspiration the pupils then wrote, recorded and starred in their own film. See their fantastic re-enactment of the life of a Roman soldier, living and training in the Roman barracks at Isca (now Caerleon) nearly 2000 years ago. Welsh youth movement Urdd Gobaith Cymru, or The Urdd, was founded in 1922 to provide children and young people with the chance to learn and socialise in the Welsh language. David Lloyd George
The first Welshman to be Prime Minister of Britain, David Lloyd George was a Liberal who is credited as being the father of the 'Welfare State' thanks to his People's Budget of 1910. John Cornwell: Colliery photos
John Cornwell was a freelance photographer who took many photographs of collieries, mostly in south Wales and the English Midlands, both underground and on the surface, during the 1970s and early 1980s. He perfected a method of underground photography using the standard colliery lighting and was able to photograph coal faces, roadways, shafts and equipment with amazing clarity. In addition to photographing working mines he also recorded abandoned mine workings, above and below ground. John Cornwell was also well respected in the broader field of industrial archaeology. He published a number of books on Welsh and English collieries. The copyright of his south Wales images are now owned by National Museum Wales.
