Capel Garmon Firedog
The Capel Garmon firedog is an Iron Age masterpiece made over 2,000 years ago.
The original firedog was discovered by a farm worker in 1852 near Carreg Goedog farm, Capel Garmon. It was found lying on its side, buried in peat with a large stone placed at each end.
It was originally one of a pair marking the central hearth of an Iron Age chieftain’s roundhouse. You can see the shape of an animal’s head on each side of the firedog. It could be a horse, an ox or even a mythical beast!
