Capel Garmon Firedog Replica

An experimental replica of the Capel Garmon firedog was made by artist-blacksmith, David Petersen, in 1991. The recreation revealed more details about how the original piece was made.

Somewhere around three in the morning, alone in the workshop, immersed in the project, you enter the same mindset. You can relate to how the original person making it was feeling.
[David Petersen]

Petersen estimated that it took the Iron Age blacksmith three years to make, from smelting the iron to the finished product. X-rays have shown that the firedog was made up of 85 separate pieces of wrought iron. There’s no doubt that it would have held great significance and value by its owner.
