John Powell (Llandysul) Collection: National Service 1950s
Collection consisting of filmed interview, photos and letters in which John Powell from Llandysul describes his National Service in the Parachute Regiment during the late 1950's.
John Powell, born in Cardiff in 1938. He experienced the effects of the Second World War in Cardiff as a child. He bas called up for National Service in the Brith Army, receiving basic training in 1957 and later volunteered to join the parachute regiment. He was posted to C Company 2nd Battalion Parachute Regiment, Talavera Barracks, Aldershot. He served in Cyprus in the late 1950s during the Greek Cypriot War of Independence briefly before being dispatched to Amman, Jordan with the 16th Parachute Infantry Brigade during the attempted military coup and the Jordan Crisis of 1958.
