Peter Jones (Kahkewāquonāby) (1802-1856)

Peter Jones was a Wesleyan missionary from the Ojibwe nation in Canada, and of part Welsh descent through his father. His birth name was Kahkewāquonāby and he was raised by his mother and her family in the Ojibwe culture, language and faith before he eventually reunited with his father as a teenager. As part of his eventual conversion to Christianity, he adopted his new name. Using his bilingual skills, he worked as missionary among the Ojibwe and represented their interests before the British Indian Department. He visited Britain on four separate occasions to raise funds for his work and Welsh newspapers enthusiastically reported about his public appearances, never tiring to point out his Welsh descent.
