Children's Clothes and Shoes

It wasn't until the late eighteenth century that children's wear first appeared. Before, children were dressed as miniature adults, in clothes that limited their freedom.

The new clothes included sailor suits for boys and uncorseted dresses for girls. Until the early twentieth century boys still wore dresses until the age of five or six, when they were 'breeched' (given their first pair of breeches or trousers).

After the First World War there was a relaxation of dress for all age groups. A new fashion for sports, fresh air and sunshine, and the growing ready-to-wear industry contributed to the adoption by adults of simpler, more comfortable, active styles that had been devised for children.

Cyfarthfa Castle Museum and Art Gallery holds a lot of children's clothes and textiles spanning from the 19th century through to the 20th century.
