Archaeology Activities at Buckholt Bryngaer, 2024

A collection of images relating to archaeological digs undertaken as part of the Buckholt Bryngaer project in 2024. Led by Churchill Archaeology, two community digs took place in the year attracting some 573 visits from members of the public to help at three sites in Buckholt Wood. These are a possible Neolithic enclosure, an Iron Age hilltop enclosure, and what had previously been thought to be a simple charcoal burners cottage but has turned out to be something more substantial and possibly of Medieval origin. The oldest finds have been Neolithic pottery and arrowheads from 3700BC. To date, some 103 arrowheads have been found on the Hill, suggesting that this may have been an ancient battleground as well as a place where people have lived and worked for millennia.
