Skokholm

Skokholm, 2.5 miles off the southwest Pembrokeshire coast, is just 1 and half miles in length, and half a mile wide.

In daylight Puffins, Razorbills, Guillemots and Gulls are active, whereas by night Manx Shearwater and Storm Petrels can be seen. Sea mammals such as Harbour Porpoise and Risso’s Dolphins frequent the sea around the island, with Atlantic Grey Seals occasionally reaching the shorelines in South Haven and Crab Bay.

Annual seabirds breeding and activity reports from the Island are available and collected by the Wildlife Trust of South and West Wales, in collaboration with the Seabird Subgroup of the Islands Conservation Advisory Committee.

Rising problems indicated by these reports include, aging rings falling from the birds, increased attacks from the Great Black-backed Gulls against the Shearwater (2689 eaten corpses recorded) high adult mortality rate (thought to be caused by the fishing industry, poisoning and Avian Flu. [This is a brief summary, and more detailed information by species is available in the report itself]
