Stitching botanical: James Cosmo Melvill collection
Flora of Britain and Ireland, Fflora Prydain ac Iwerddon, (James Cosmo Melvill Collection)
James Cosmo Melvill collected a wide range of wild flowering plants from all over the UK in the late 19th century and the early 20th century, including some from the depths of his own garden in Shrewsbury. The National Botanic Garden of Wales has been working on a three-year National Heritage Lottery Fund project to digitise our historic British and Irish flora collection, and to make it publicly available.
Some of the specimens from this collection, including some rare and endangered species in Wales, have been translated into stitch by the Stitching Botanical group at the Garden, both as representations of the delicate pressed specimens, and as cameos of their living state.
