William Burges (1827-1881)
These images are part of a group of thirty-eight photographs that were originally contained within an album. The photographs were taken by Burges and by his friend, Francis Bedford (1816-1894). The photographs feature Burges’s own designs and his collection of decorative objects and furniture.
Burges was one of the most important Victorian architects and designers and was commissioned by John Patrick Crichton-Stuart, 3rd Marquess of Bute, to reconstruct both Cardiff Castle and Castell Coch in the High Gothic style.
These images from Amgueddfa Cymru - National Museum Wales were digitised as a result of a gift to the Museum by the Esmée Fairbairn Foundation in 2011.
