The steamship 'Dakota' was shipwrecked on a small island named East Mouse near Amlwch, on the north coast of Anglesey, in 1877. The ship was 400 feet in length, making it one of the largest ships to be wrecked off the coast of Anglesey.

The 'Dakota' had been built for transatlantic voyages and was on its way to New York when it was ordered to change its course. For some unexplained reason, the ship turned the wrong way. It headed directly towards the coast and collided with East Mouse. The 218 passengers were rescued by the Bull Bay lifeboat.
