Sold into slavery in Canada
Description
Edward George Mills was sent to Canada in 1923 as a child migrant, by the Waifs and Strays Society. Although now he would legally be regarded as an adult at that time he had no control of his life until aged 21 and was informed that he would go and he would have to look after the younger children on the way. They lied and told him he would be given free land in Canada. It was a terrible experience and it took him years to save for a ticket home. In the UK in 1931 he thought he might get work but it was the Depression; so he thought he might return to Montreal where he had been employed as an artist at the Montreal Zoo and Fairground. He cycled to Barry hoping to work his way, but instead got a job on Barry Island Fun Fair as an artist. There he met Olwen Gwyneth John who at the age of 16 had a summer job on the rifle range. They married and settled down at Cardiff Road where he lived until he died in Sully Hospital in 1998 aged 96.
