Welsh costume: pair of sleeves featuring various flags, 19th century

Description

A pair of detachable sleeves featuring various British/English flags and a red trim. Sleeves such as these would have been worn with the traditional 'betgwn' or bedgown (an article of clothing which comprised a fitted short-sleeved bodice with attached skirt) and were particularly useful since they could be easily removed whilst undertaking house or outdoor work. This particular pair were probably made for a special commemorative event (such as those associated with the Royal family or with the achievements of Empire) during the Victorian era.
