The green woodpecker is the largest of the three species of woodpecker in Britain, it lives in more open woodland than the others, where it can often be found feeding on the ground, usually on ants. The green woodpecker is declining in numbers in Wales and is now very scarce in this area. This is an adult male, distinguished by the red centre to its 'moustache'.
