The mountain hare turns white in autumn. The change is not due to moult, but to the action of cells which absorb the colour of the fur at low temperature. This protects the hare from predators to some extent. A new dark coat grows in spring. Its zig-zag style of running and its speed are further defences against attack. They breed on the moors above the level of cultivation in Scotland and Wales.
