Print of Newtown, c. 1848

Description

A print of Broad Street in Newtown, Montgomeryshire around 1848, reproduced in an early postcard. The view is looking towards the town centre from the Long Bridge over the River Severn. Apart from its portrayal of the street life of the time, the image is of interest for the inclusion of the old market hall in the middle of the street. Such buildings, with a covered market at ground level and a large meeting room above for town business, were originally a feature of most market towns, and few now survive.
