Checkers Inn, Newtown, 1880s

Description

The thatched roof of the Checkers Inn in Broad Street, Newtown was a rare feature in a Montgomeryshire town even when this photograph was taken in the 1880s, and it was sometimes called the 'Hotel de Straw Hat'. The chimney on the right looks particularly precarious here, but the attractive building was sadly demolished, despite much local opposition, in the 1930s.
