Montgomery canal, Welshpool, c. 1902

Description

The water wheel of a corn mill can be seen next to the locks, with a coal wharf alongside it. The thatched cottage on the left was part of Sergeants' Row, a terrace of cottages built by the Earl of Powis to house the families of militia sergeants during the Napoleonic Wars. The wharf building in the right foreground now houses the Powysland Museum.
