Description

Leighton tollgate, which controlled one of the turnpike roads serving Welshpool. This was on the eastwards route over the River Severn towards the English border. The large sign on the tiny tollhouse is headed 'Leighton Gate - Tolls to be taken at this Gate from and after the 1st of May 1835', though this photograph probably dates from around 1880.
