Turnpike toll caution notice, 1828
Description
A warning notice issued in 1828 concerning the evasion of payment of the full toll rates on the turnpike road between Welshpool and Montgomery. Charges were set according to the number of animals harnessed to carriages or goods wagons, and it would appear that some road users simply separated one or more horses from the vehicles until they had passed through the gates. A penalty of five pounds was a substantial sum for the time.
