The 'Ariel' bicycle, made by Haynes and Jeffries, 1870

Description

The 'Ariel', which first appeared in 1871, was named after its place of manufacture, Ariel works in Coventry. It was the first bicycle to be fitted with solid rubber tyres and was the precursor of the 'Ordinary', better known as the 'Penny Farthing'.
