Hi. When Y Gorlan was demolished around 1985, I rescued (bought) part of the huge staircase inside. I adapted it and installed it in a domwstic residence in Gronant - where it probably still stands today... The man who stripped the many layers of paint and varnish from the sorry looking timbers I took to him became very excited when I went to collect the fascia, bannister, Finial and spindles... Let me break off there and just to tell you that I am 99% sure that Y Gorlan was NOT originally the Claremont Hydro - that it was originally built as a hotel shortly after the Chester/Holyhead railway line came to Rhyl (1848). I believe it was named the Railway Hotel. Unfortunately the internet seems to know nothing about this, but I am sure I researched it at Rhyl library back in the 1980's before the internet... So going back to the story of the staircase. The man told me that is was made of North American Pitch Pine, and that the trees can be 200 years old when felled. So by my reckoning, the tree which produced the magnificent staircase at the hotel was very probably planted in the Americas around about the year 1650... About 150 years after Columbus discovered it - Wow ! I now live 2000 miles away, perhaps someone might care to visit the library to see if more information is available regarding the hotel... ? Best regards. Trevor
