Description

The Royal Alexandra Hospital replaced the original hospital which was sited in front of where the Floral Hall stood. Princess Alexandra laid the foundation stone in 1894 but the hospital was not opened until 12th May 1902 by the Prince and Princess of Wales (George V). £10,000 was given to Miss Edith Vizard by the Duke of Westminster after his horse "Flying Fox" had won the Eclipse Stakes, a fact commemorated by the weather vane which is a fox.The hospital was for the treatment of cripples by fresh air. Dame Agnes Hunt came as a patient here, became a nurse under Miss Vizard and Miss Graham and went on to co-found with Robert Jones Gobowen Hospital. The builders were Thornton and Son from Liverpool.
