The King's Room, Tredegar House, Newport, c. 1920
Description
The bedroom used by Evan Morgan, one of the more colourful members of the Morgan family, throughout the early 20th century. Evan's lifestyle was eccentric and extravagant. A well-known society figure of his time, he associated with many famous people, such as Aldous Huxley, Augustus John, and most notoriously, Aleister Crowley, holding rowdy weekend parties and Black Masses in his 'Magic Room' in the cellars.
Evan also kept exotic pets, most notably a honey bear called Alice, a foul-mouthed parrot called Blue Boy, and Somerset, a kangaroo with whom he liked to box.
