Letter from Corporal John Griffith Jones, from a camp to the west of Vicksburg, to his parents and brothers in Beaver Dam, Wisconsin, 30 July 1863 [page 1 of 4]
Description
John says that he has had a touch of the fever [often referred to as 'ague'] but he's much better by now. His hand is much better although he cannot wear a big coat or a dress coat when needed.
The weather has been bad and John says the rain and thunder is much worse than anything he has seen in Wisconsin.
They've been told that a cavalry of 25,000 is needed for three years or for the rest of the war. They will receive a bounty of 400, 16 dollars a month or 25 if they have a horse. Half of the regiment has decided to go but the Welshmen haven't yet decided.
He received his wages today and he sends ten dollars with this letter.
