Close study of the contents of the scrapbook reveals that it is not the work of the Rev Henry Payne but a collaborative effort by Theophilus Jones and Thomas Price in preperation for the publication of the second volume of the History of Brecknockshire. The major evidence is
1) the handwriting is not that of Henry Payne whose neat careful script can be seen in his Parochial Studies. It matches that of Theophilus Jones in letters in the NLW with characteristic ampersand , and the use of an almost horizontal 8
2) At six places within the text sentences are completed with the initials TJ
3) All but two of the engravings included in Volume 2 of the History which appear above the name of T Price are closely related to images in the sketchbook. Moreover these images in the sketchbook are marked with Plate and figure numbers which closely relate to those in the published volume. This suggests that these images were then engraved from the sketchbook by J Basire.
4) Mr Payne is referred to in the text. Thee is also reference in Parry Jones article on Payne (Brycheiniog Vol. 5, 1959) in which he quotes Payne's dismay at the inaccuracy of the representation of Partricio Screen in the History. This is based clearly on the drawing in the sketchbook.
5) So it would appear that this is an important source of information on the way that Theophilus Jones and the young Thomas Price collected material for inclusion in volume 2 of the history detailing the source of many of the images which were copied by Price form Gough;s Camden, Dineley's Notitia Cambro Britannia and articles in the Gentlemans Magazine .
