Description

A booklet and invitation for the Celebration Dinner Dance held to commemorate the 60th Anniversary of the Cardiff Reform Synagogue. The event was held at The Village Hotel in Coryton, Cardiff on 25 October 2008. Included in the booklet are a list of members who will be saying grace and giving toasts. Included are the Rabbi of the Synagogue Rabbi Dr Charles Middleburgh and his predecessor Rabbi Elaina Rothman. The booklet also includes a menu for the dinner.

Rabbi Dr Charles Middleburgh served the Cardiff Reform Synagogue from 2004 till 2014. He has been a senior lecturer at the Leo Baeck College, a Jewish education institution in London, since 1984.

Rabbi Elaina Rothman was the Rabbi of Cardiff New Synagogue from 1992 until retiring 2002.

The Cardiff Reform Synagogue was founded in 1948 as the Cardiff New Synagogue. The following year, it became a constituent member of the Movement for Reform Judaism. Born in reaction against the more restrictive traditions of the Orthodox Judaism of Cardiff Hebrew Congregation, such as the prohibition of driving on the Sabbath and the ban on interfaith marriages, the new Synagogue appealed to the immigrants who had fled the war-torn Europe, where the Reform movement was already well-established. The congregation worships in a converted Methodist Chapel on Moira Terrace they acquired in 1952
