James Goodwin (b.1891)

Description

This is James Goodwin's British Merchant Seaman card from 1919-1921. He served as 2nd Officer on the British steamer BARRON HERRIES when it was sunk in the Irish Sea by the German submarine U 91 under the command of Alfred von Glasenapp on 22 April 1918. To protect his captain from being taken prisoner, James surrendered himself. A picture taken on board U 91 a few days later shows him with another prisoner of war, Mr Main from the LANDONIA, and Lotte, the newly acquired ship's dog.
