William Shakespeare was a poet, playwright and actor known as the world's greatest playwright. His plays, composed during the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, have been translated into every major living language and performed more frequently than any other playwright ever. His contemporary, Ben Jonson, said of him: "he was not of an age, but for all time."
