Image 4: Griff sold the lot, and to Wales he came. Seven years ago, Mr Griffith J Roberts from Radnor, Ohio, hadn't seen his homeland or his family in Wales since he moved to America in 1898. "In 1950 I lost my wife" said Mr Roberts "and I said to myself, 'Griff, you must make that journey to the old country". He auctioned his farm and crossed the Atlantic in fifteen hours on an airoplane. He thoroughly enjoyed his visit. He came over again in 1952 and this year, despite the fact that he is 86 years old, Mr Roberts was among the fittest on the Eisteddfod Maes in Llangefni. He comes originally from Garn Fadryn on the Llyn peninsula. After labouring on farms on the peninsula and working down the mines in south wales and Worcester, he was inspired when he was 23 years old to see the world and to earn a better living. He went to America and before settling down in Radnor he held a number of different jons in eighteen states there - from New Jersey to Californi. He only received two years of education ever, he claims, but he learnt a lot from his experiences. He had to go out and work when he was nine years old when his father drowned off one of Prothmadog's little boats. On his visits to Wales, Mr Roberts stays over with his sister who lives in Llangwnadl and he takes a trip to see his wife's family in different areas in south Wales. His parents came from the Bulth Wells area. With Mr Roberts in the photograph is Mr E H Williams, Old Colwyn, who used to be the Cymdeithas Cymry ar Wasgar Chairman. During the last world war, Mr Williams served as a Squadron Leader in the Airforce. He was president of Iceland Airforce's Welsh Society and Editor of 'Seren y Gogledd'.
