Desmond steam locomotive, Orb Works, Newport

This image shows a picture of the 0-4-0 class saddle tank steam locomotive called 'Desmond' it was bought to serve the steelworks in around 1906. It was built by Avonside Locomotive Company in 1904. It was named after a member of the Lysaght family and was in use at the works up until 1973. It is now owned by Llanelli Heritage Railway who have secured funding to turn it once again into a fully operational steam engine. This photograph was donated by the Orb Works when it closed it's doors in 2020. It has been made possible to share this picture with thanks to the National Lottery Heritage Fund.
