[top right margin] 61
John Phillips - I am a Blacksmith - I live at

the Blaina - I was at home at my House

on Sunday the 3[r]d November last until

about 4 o'Clock in the Evening - I went

out on the Road for a walk - when

I met a man named John Licklinton - He

asked me if I would I would go with him so far as

the Royal Oak - I asked him what for? -

He said the Chartist meeting was there -
and that there would be speeches there-
I said yes - and went with him - I went

into the kitchen sat down and called

for a pint of Beer - I remained in the

kitchen for about three quarters of

an hour - after I drank a pint of Beer

I went into the Lodge Room where the

Chartist meting was to take place - I

heard a man, I believe an Englishman, I

don't know his name - speaking - He

said that every one there were to meet at
____o'clock that Evening
6^ on the mountain between Pen y cae and
Nantyglo - and that every one was to bring arms
with him - everything they could get and a
lump of bread and Cheese in his pocket -
that he didn't think they would be back for

a few days - and not to let our wives

know /but little about it - and not to make

them uneasy - I saw Zephaniah Williams

there - He addressed the meeting in Welsh

in nearly the same words as the Englishman -

that every one were to take arms to the meeting -

that they were not be afraid - as they would

have every thing in their own hands -

Page 2:
I then went back home - about 6 o'Clock

I was at the Royal Oak again - I saw

Prisr - again - I saw him near the

Bar - he said "There's no time to delay

so you must be off every one" - He went

out - I begged Mrs Williams Prisoner's

Wife to give me a Pint of Beer which she

did - I then went with the rest -

George Lewis - a Smith - living at Blaina -

David Evans a Smith also living at Blaina -

came out of the door at the same time I

did - I did not see them afterwards -

they had nothing in their hands - We

went from the Royal Oak through Nanty

glo to the Mountain - a great number of

people were there - Some armed with

Guns, pikes &c_ I saw Prisr there -

He was backwards and forwards talking

to one and another - I heard him say

that he would go down and get Steam

trams as many as he could and

get planks to put upon them and that

we must all prepare our way for

Newport that night - We then went

in a Body down the Hill - We all

halted at the bottom of the Hill for

some little time - we went to the

yard before the Furnace and stood there

for a short time - We were ordered

to march on as the time was short -
I can't say who ordered us - I went
on to Pontaberbeeg where I tried to make
my escape when two Men with pikes

said "you must go on" - I came on

Page 3:
to Newport - I came through the Park
I stopped in the Park about half an
hour. I saw a great many of armed
men there - I came to within 60
yards of this House [*] and on Seeing the
Men running away I ran away too
I did not see Z Williams after I saw
him on the Mountain
