The Statement of David Jones of the
town of Pontypool in the County of Monmouth

I attended the Meeting held at Pontnewynidd
on the first of January. - The people that attended
the Meeting had previously paraded through
Pontypool, headed by Vincent, Frost and
Edwards with a Band and Banners bearing
__ when they arrived the Field
__where the meeting was held
various decrees, in regular procession - When^
they arranged themselves in front of a Hustings
erected for the purpose. - Messrs. Frost, Vincent,
Edwards, Jones, Llewellyn and some others mounted
the Hustings, Mr. Edwards was proposed and
seconded to the Chair and elected by shew of
hands - On taking the Chair he proceeded to address
the Meeting - After explaining the object of the
Meeting he entered upon the five points in the
peoples' Charter - He said the people were
determined to have the Charter, and that he
(William Edwards) had a good Strong Arm
(then thrusting his Arm forward) to help the cause
of the people - He said that he William Edwards
had no doubt that many lives would be lost, but
that he William Edwards was prepared to lose
his life, further that the people paid 15/6 in [*]

the Pound taxes and they would not stand it
much longer. - Mr. Edwards afterwards introduced
Mr. Vincent to the Meeting as a friend to the
Working Classes - Vincent Said he was ready to
suffer death or imprisonment in the Cause, and

if any of Lord John Russell 's Spies, ^ he was ready
to give himself up, then told the Meeting his
residence in London. - He said the House of
Commons was long room with a Chap up one
end of it, with Bag Wig on Singing out "order,
order, order," with a lot of fellows sitting round
some drunk and some asleep, and in the
whole they were a lot of Drunkards, Gamblers,
Money Grinders and Tyrants and that the

send the Members about their business and so
have a new House of Commons [He then
related the particulars of an interview he
Henry Vincent and some others had with Mr

Richard Potter ^ to support the Charter.] He told
the Meeting the Members of the House of Commons
were fools and enemies of the Working-Man,
and that some fine morning the people would

much and said " We will,we will." ] He said
the people in Yorkshire, Lancashire, London, Bristol,
Bath, Trowbridge and Newport were determined
to have the Charter, and that they would Crush
the tyrants with one blow, and that the Soldiers
would not fire upon them, and if the Soldiers
came against them, they would put the Women
in front of them and then the Soldiers
would fire upon the Women and that half the Soldiers
would turn over to the Chartists. - The Working
Classes produced all Wealth and they ought to
have their share of that Wealth - The people had
been Kept down long enough for the Working Men
had the Shopkeepers on them and o[n] the Shopkeepers
were the farmers and on the farmers the parsons
and the Lawyers on the parsons
^ and the Army on the Lawyers and the Government
on the Army and on the Government there was a
pretty little bauble, but the people of England
had all joined together, and now the people of
Wales would make a long leek and Stretch it
across the Channel, and the English would join
the Welsh and then they would wriggle
and twist about until down would come those
that were about them, and the pretty little bauble
on the top would come down too, and
then they should all be equal and have equal
rights and equal property. -
