George Maule Esq -

My Dear Sir
I have it in proof that the Witnesses
Benjamin Gould and Joshua Thomas called
on the part of the Prisoner have committed
the most gross perjury that can be
Committed and as I have reason to Know
that the same system to a much greater
extent will be attempted in the cases to be
tried - I mentioned the subject
this Morning to Mr Raven who did not
consider it probable that the Attorney
General would interfere - I have
Since communicated the circumstances
to the Magistrates and they have
directed Bills to be preferred on their
behalf in case the Attorney General
should decline to prosecute - But
before the Bills are presented I deem
it right to ascertain the Attorney
General's decision - The case of Gould is
that where, in his Evidence he swore there was
no noise or violence on the part of the mob
but only by the Special Constables at the door
of the Westgate - That of Joshua Thomas
who swore that not one person went up or
down Commercial Street or Charles Street
when the mob were passing down Stow
Hill at the top of Charles Street towards

for perjury

Benjamin Gould

and

Joshua Thomas

The following is written vertically down the right of page

The Westgate - both these facts we can
contradict by numerous witnesses

I am &c W.T.H.P. [William Truman Harford Phelps]

P.S. The Evidence of Joshua Thomas is
important against us as regards our
material Witness the Boy Rees and
which stands uncontradicted - The
Solicitor General I believe felt some
little difficulty upon this point as
throwing discredit upon Rees' testimony
generally. -
