James Jones of Newport Plasterer States - I am a
Special Constable - On Monday Morning 4th November
about 1/4 past 8 I was directed by Sir Thomas Phillips then the
Mayor of Newport to shew 3 old men (who had been taken into
Custody and then liberated) their way home by a different
way to that by which the mob were coming towards Newport
- I took them by Banes Well and returned to the Westgate - I
was standing on the top step in front of the Westgate door
close by the Eastern pillar when the mob came round the
Corner from Stow Hill - I then ran throught the house -
and through the yard and Garden belonging to the Westgate
and down a passage which communicated with Commercial
Street by Mr Clapperton's Shop [*] - Just as I got into Commercial
St a number of people about 20 were before me going towards the
Westgate one of them a lad, had a Gun in his hand, some of the
rest had sticks but I had not time to observe whether they had any
other weapons - they appeared to be colliers or laboring men- I ran
down corn Street through Skinner Street up Griffin Street and stood
at Mr. Dew's Corner, from which I could see the front of the Westgate
when I got there the firing had commenced
