The Examination of John Rowberry
and the several witnesses taken on Oath
before us three of Her Majesty's Justices of the
Peace in and for the said County this 18th
day of November 1839 in the presence and
hearing of William Shellard a Prisoner
charged with High Treason and Sedition

John Rowberry being Sworn States - I am an In[n]keeper residing in
the Town of Pontypool, some time ago I remember the Prisoner coming
to my house, when he came in he asked me if I was a Chartist,
I said No he said I am a Chartist and a real Chartist - It is not
a twelve month ago it may be six or eight months

Richard Thomas Johnson I am a Schoolmaster residing at
Pontypool. I was in the house of William Jones a Watchmaker in
the Town of Pontypool, on Sunday the third day of November I
dined there with Mrs Jones during the day I saw a number of
persons coming into the House one of them Armed with a Gun
there were a number of People in a room up stairs, during
the day I saw William Shellard come into the House - I only
saw him once about 7 o'Clock in the Evening

James Emery I am a Cabinet Maker residing at Pontypool about
3 weeks ago I joined a Chartist Club in the Town of Pontypool
held at a Private House on the Tow[?n]hill on Sunday the 3rd Novr
I went in Company with John Dyer for a Horse for Jones the
Watchmaker, that he may ride round the Hills for the purpose of
getting Chartists together to come back to this place, we took the
Horse to David Richards' Beer house - I heard Jones order the Men
to collect themselves together and force as many as they could to be
ready by two o'Clock - he told them to Arm themselves and to
