Thomas Watkins Currier Pontypool onThursday
night about half past 10 between Cup of & the
Hollybush in the parish of Llanvrechfa I & Mr. Barnabas
Brough were going to Pontypool when a body of men armed
with guns spears and clubs coming from Pontypool stopped us
and advised us to return with them - saying we
should not go further - we went with them to the
marches gate near Newport. we stopped there till about
3 o clock - We came along the road in marching order
when we came to the turnpike they put us in a
room up stairs with a guard of about 7 men over us.
About 3 o clock we heard the word to march - we were
ordered out - and the whole party with ourselves marched
on to Risca - at the turnpike we heard one of the
men say they expected to meet Mr.
Frost at Risca. Brough told him he knew
Mr. Frost & asked if he might see him - The man said
he would introduce - when we got to Risca we went into
the Oak Public house & the man who had promised to fetch
Mr. Frost did so. When he came into the room Mr Brough rose
& told him I & my friend have been detained by these men
