The Deposition of _______
John Harford of Blackwood
taken upon oath states That
Collier, I work at the Rock Colliery
I know John Frost of Newport I first

in left hand margin against the above:- John Frost

knew him when he went to
Dukes Town from Blackwood
the last meeting It is since
Whitsuntide I did not go
to Dukes Town I saw Mr John Frost
go thro' Blackwood that day
there was a little Boy was
with him as I saw about
12 & 14 years of age. I believe
Mr Frost had a blue Coat & balck
Hat he was riding in a Gig
with the Lad X I saw Mrs Frost
in the Road between the Kevan
& the Welsh Oak on Monday
Morning about 4 Oclock in the
Morning of the day after the
Riots at Newport. I will not
swear whether it was a red
Cravat or Red Handkerchief
round his neck but it was
Red. When I and the Company

that I was with met Mr Frost
the men said to him Mr Frost
we had better return Frost
No they had better not he said
they should come on to Newport
and take possession of the Poor
House and the Soldiers and their arms
Then he said there was a storehouse
where there was plenty of powder
and then they would blow up
the Bridge and then they
were to stop the Welsh Coaches
that did run in the north
then that would be a notice
for them in the north to
commence on Monday
night. He said he should
be able to see 2 or 3 of
his friends or enemies
in Newport. When I first
came to the Welsh Oak from
Blackwood the place was

so full that I went on with
some of the men to the Cefn where
we got some beer whilst there
a young man on Horseback
came to us and said that
Frost was we were
to come back as Mr Frost
was waiting for us We
turned back from the Cefn
to the Welsh Oak & on the
road met Mr Frost who
told us what I have before
stated. I heard Mr. Davies
say that Mr . Frost was
at Job Tovey's this was the Saturday night before the Riots I know
Frances Tovey who lives
at Pentllwyn or Pont y Gwaith
because he goes to the Chapel
I made my Escape from
the men after seeing Frost
I got into a cowshed & droppd
off to sleep
The Young Man on horseback
about 20 years of age. He
was dressed in a round blue

Jacket buttoned up in
front a sort of Cap like
an Ostler's Cap with a peak
to him before. a bay Horse
I think it was I believe
he had trousers on nothing
particular round his face
What I could see of him
he had a whitish face
he was not very fat
It was about 4 Oclock
between 3 & 4 when I came
out of the Cefn.

There was a Chartists I attended and an original founder of the Lodge
the meeting at the Coach at Blackwood is kept

name was put down or not
I did not stop I did not sit
& they wo[ul]d not enter my name
unless I came more than once
they promised to enter the next
time I came I never
went to Lodge afterwards
