the horse appeared to be sweating and I asked
the Driver why he did not go on and not
keep the animal about in that condition
he said he could not pass and asked asked me to go
and ask leave for him. I went up to the
mob and spoke for liberty for him but
was hustled off and was not heard
I went back and tried to get off and
was challenged after I got a few yards up
with guns and Pikes and I was ordered
to retire back to the mob I went back and
sat down by the side of the bank by
the Trams as side for a long time
and until orders were given to go
on to Pye Corner. I heard that Jones the
watchmaker at Pontypool was at the
High Cross I went on into the mob to
Pye Corner and then I saw Frost in
the same dress a Pilot Cloth Coat and
Red Cravat. He then said the guns
should go next and the Bludgeons
follow next an them without Arms
behind there were not all the people
present but those that had guns went
in front I then went up to him and
asked him what in the name of God
was he going to do was he going to attack

some place or people. He said he
was We were going to attack Newport
and take it and blow up or blow
down the Bridge I was not certain
which and stop the Welsh Mail from
proceeding to Birmingham and
that there would be three delegates
there waiting for the coach an hour and
half after time and that if the Coach
did not arrive at that time
the attack would commence in
Birmingham and from there
to the north of England and Scotland
and that was to be the signal for
the whole nation I told him he might
as well lead us to a slaughter House
to be slaughtered. I immitated a
Butcher leading a flock of Lambs
to the slaughter House to be slaughtered
and for Gods sake to order the men
to return to the Hills. He asked me
if I did think so and he turned from me
with a scornful look and I made
my Escape and laid down in

some nettles and briars in a field &
I tried to get away but finding paths
of the mob on the road I dropped down
as they passed to prevent being taken
and I was in my House by 10 Oclock
that morning Monday and in Bed
The mob forced people out of their
Houses all the way down
I saw them at Risca go into a House
where there was a widow infants and
I said if anyone has them I would
knock them down.
I was at the Coach & Horses
on Friday before the Riots as I was

I met a tall man with a Brindle
whom I jostled agst he asked me if I
was a Chartist I told I was not He said

mind what you are about the Chartists

best all come down from off the
Hills and sweep your Dingles like
before the for we have had a
Delegate meeting in this neighbourhood

the Chartists all the time I saw

I there saw Jones in the passage when
I was going out of the Kitchen up
stairs Bill Barwell was there he
had everything to say as I heard almost
they were ordering strangers up and not
the old hands who had been there before
These said upstairs they wanted to organise
as much Members as they could
and now was the time those who
was Chartists and who was not
and that the Charter would be
gained before a Month and that
without bloodshed and everyone
that did not come forward would
be proved as cowards and always
looked upon a Blacksheep
On the Sunday Evening I heard the
password spoken of in front of the Coach
& Horses It was "Beans" and "Well"
and those that could not answer
the word were to be made Prisoners
