James Jones of Newport in the county of Monmouth
Tiler & Plasterer States -
that previous to Monday the 4th Nov[embe]r last
I was sworn in a Special Constable - & that I was
acting as a Special Constable on Monday morning
the day of the riots and was stationed at
the entrance door I saw the Mob form in
front of the Westgate armed with Guns, Pikes
mandrils and other weapons, after the
firing at the Westgate had ceased I
went out of the Westgate, and saw the Mob
running away in all directions dropping their
weapons. I saw one man dressed in a
flannel smock running by Mr Clements
Shop and then up Bainswell Road he
dropped a pike opposite Mr Clements
Door, I picked up that pike and

observed it had a brass ferule, a hole in
the handle and burnt at the end. I placed

it in the Westgate Coach House, the pike
I shew produce is the same I then picked up -
I also picked up a new mandril numbered
20 and several other pikes in different
parts of the town which are of the same description
as those I saw in the hands of the Mob before
the Westgate and similar to those now
produced. the pikes I picked up I
placed in the Westgate Coach House
by the direction of the Magistrates
I also picked up a Gun a powder flask and a small bundle containing 42 leaden balls which I also
placed in the Westgate - James Jones
